  • The Health Benefits from Having an Outdoor Living Space

Did you know spending more time outside in your outdoor living space can improve your overall mood and health? According to the article “A Prescription for Better Health: Go Alfresco” by Harvard Health Publications,“…the average American spends 90% of his or her life indoors, and as we get older we become even more inclined to not venture out.” But, when homeowners add features and entertainment to their backyards, they naturally spend much more time outside with their family and friends. And, without noticing, they receive the many health benefits that come with spending time outdoors. Read below and discover 5 key health benefits nature can offer you!

#1 Increase in vitamin D level:

The sun is how we give our body vitamin D and when we are outside, we soak it all up! Harvard Health Publications states that vitamin D may have proactive fighting agents against many diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, depression and even heart attacks and stoke. Due to their study, mentioned above, that indicates we spend about 90% of our life indoors, it is safe to say that many of us don’t receive nearly enough vitamin D as we should. Getting outside and spending quality time with your family and friends is a great way to get your vitamin D and reap all the benefits that come with it.

#2 Exercise, exercise, exercise!

When you are indoors you are probably not moving much and fulfilling a more sedentary lifestyle; while being outdoors is heavily associated with being active. Having an outdoor living area and an entertainment space actually gets people moving around and exercising without them even noticing. And, of course, there are many benefits that come with exercising such as an increase in your mental and physical health, improvement in you sleeping habits, and better anxiety control.

#3 Be happier instantly:

“The light from the sun tends to increase people’s moods [and self-esteem]”, says Harvard Health Publications. Think about it…how could spending time in a beautiful outdoor kitchen while bonding with your family or relaxing next to cascading waterfall right in your own backyard not improve your mood everyday?

#4 You will notice your concentration is better:

Here is an interesting fact from the Harvard Health Publications: “A study published in 2008 found that children with ADHD scored higher on a test of concentration after a walk through a park…” Being outdoors relaxes the mind allowing us to focus much better. As little as 20 minutes a day outside can dramatically make a huge difference and improve our concentration!

#5 Is it possible you can really heal faster by being outside? YES!

In 2005, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh reported that, “…spinal surgery patients experienced less pain and stress and took fewer pain medications during their recoveries if they were exposed to natural light,” (Harvard Health Publications). This study produced a strong theory that exposure to the outdoors and sunlight may help people heal faster.

There are countless benefits to being out in the sun and what better way is there to spend time outside than in your own outdoor living space. Cook al fresco in your outdoor kitchen or unwind next to your koi pond with a trickling waterfall and take in all of the benefits the outdoors and sunshine has to offer you.
